The Basement
The Basement

The Basement is a multi-use, unique and atmospheric space at The Argus Lofts in Brighton’s North Laines. The space is ideal for devising, producing and showcasing experimental theatre, Live Art and performance. It is also the perfect backdrop for exhibitions seeking the opposite of a white wall gallery space. Its underground location makes it ideal for focussed seminars, workshops and meetings, with a difference. With exposed brickwork and iron beams, The Basement is a blank canvas with an edgy industrial feel. Created in September 2003 through a Percentage for Art scheme from Brighton & Hove City Council and the developer of The Argus Lofts, it was later refurbished and extended in Spring 2007.

The Basement is now fully accessible with three flexible areas plus an open plan reception and café area.

The Space – The body of The Basement, an expansive space, 25m x 8m with brick walls and polished concrete floor creating a unique atmosphere. The raw finishes of this space present artists with unbound potential for experimentation and can be used for performances, rehearsals, production and exhibitions. Dance matting can be added to the floor for added flexibility to this space.

The Bar - We have a fully Licensed Bar serving speciality regional beers, wine and cider. Spirits are sourced due to their independence, origin and ethics.  All drinks are sympathetically priced making The Basement's bar the perfect place to spend time before or after a show.

The Pit – An intimate excavated amphitheatre with a sprung floor and performance area of 7.5m x 7m. With a capacity of thirty to forty people on tiered seating the Pit’s sunken stage is ideally suited to smaller performances, showcases and feedback sessions.   The Study – This is a space for reading, reflection and research away from The Basement’s busy production office. It can be used as a meeting room or for training and feedback sessions and is equipped with information resources and wireless Internet.

The above spaces can be hired and accessed exclusively or together. The Basement has a capacity limit for up to 230 people and is available for hire 7 days per week for a day, evening or a set duration of days. For venue hire fees please contact
