CELEBRATING CONNECTING, March 2007
The Basement provided production management, risk assessments and
health and safety for the event. This was the culmination of Connecting,
a two-year arts initiative involving more than 500 local young people,
professional artists, art teachers and youth leaders working with
every secondary and special school and targeted youth centres and
groups in Brighton. Young people from across the city presented
a packed programme of dynamic experimental live performance and
film to mark the end of Connecting and the launch of a new children
and young people’s art strategy for Brighton & Hove: Express.

JUBILEE
SQUARE TEA DANCE part of CELEBRATING AGE, July 2006 The Basement
produced this event and worked with our supported company Ragroof
Theatre to deliver an out door afternoon Tea Dance in Jubilee Square.
This stylish event celebrated the art of partner dancing from the
1920’s to the 1950’s. Over 2000 participants of all ages
were invited to dance to toe tapping tunes from the dance hall era.
Jubilee Square was transformed with a dance floor, live 12 piece Jive
Band, tea and cakes and dance classes. Celebrating Age took place
across Brighton and included an international conference, a national
exhibition and a citywide arts festival. £5,000 was allocated
to a community chest to assist and promote the involvement of local
older people in the Celebrating Age arts festival.

FRIEND SHIP FEAST,
April 2006 – The Basement co-produced this event
involving children from four local schools who took part in a culinary
event at City College, Brighton & Hove learning cookery skills
and promoting healthy eating. We wanted to encourage children to
try a range of food types that are healthy, tasty and fun and to
learn new, simple recipes and techniques. Catering Students taught
younger children how to prepare simple recipes, kitchen health and
safety and basic food hygiene. Over 120 children took part over
two days and enjoyed a communal feast as part of the day’s
celebrations of friendship. This was part of a UK-wide Friend Ship
Project initiated by Liverpool 2008. The overall project aims were
to promote understanding between young people living in the cities,
to celebrate cultural and social diversity and to use culture as
a tool for community and city cohesion.

SAY AAH 2, October 2005 –
The Basement was the co-producer and event manager of the
second arts and health event which took place in October 2005 at
Brighton Dome Corn Exchange to attract partners to take part in
The Food Challenge Fund. The food themed event was a great success
attracting 250 people from the worlds of art, food, health and social
care to eat, meet and create. Delegates were invited to bid for
funding towards a project cooked up over a networking communal meal.
Speeches and presentations from arts and food professionals from
all over the world were animated by a fantastic show from theatre
company 3Monkey Productions and surprise interventions from local
performers. The meal itself was a fantastic homemade, locally sourced
and organically grown four-course feast provided by Meringue Suitcase.
The event inspired 47 applications into the Food Challenge Fund.
The Say AaH 2 initiative was funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and was part of the Brighton & Hove Arts Commission’s making a difference initiative funded with lottery money from the Millennium Commission and Arts Council England through the Urban Cultural Programme.
