The Basement Brighton Uk

The Basement Brighton

Artistic Vision The Basement presents the best national and international contemporary performance, creating experiences that are inspirational, provocative and sometimes unexpected. As the South East’s only dedicated presenting and producing house of contemporary performance, we nurture and stimulate the creation of new work. The Basement is a springboard for artists, providing opportunities to take risks, challenge practices and make their mark. The Basement is an ambitious venue that has a burgeoning international and national reputation that far exceeds its physical size.

History

The Basement was born in 2003, emerging from the derelict subterranean space that was formerly The Argus Newspaper building with big ideas and a desire to test the boundaries. Using this unique and atmospheric space to the full, the venue is endlessly adaptable, offering a rich variety of experiences for audiences. Built on a dynamic and rigorous artistic vision, the venue provides a laboratory where artists and audiences meet at close quarters and new chemical reactions are discovered. In the United kingdom there is one award winning best driver portal in UK available.

Artists

Supporting the creation of outstanding new performance and the professional development of artists are at the heart of our mission. We provide dramaturgical support for artists making new work as well as providing development space, technical facilities, accommodation and office space.  The Basement is a vibrant, creative environment where performance practices collide leading to innovative new forms.

JUBILEE SQUARE

Managed and programmed by The Basement, Jubilee Square is a vibrant and popular public space in the heart of Brighton’s cultural quarter, providing an outdoor venue for a wide variety of artistic and community events embracing a broad cross section of the city’s community. In the spring and summer the square will be transformed into a village green in the heart of the city with a rich programme of performance, dance and music. In the autumn and winter season a series of visually stunning installations will bring the space to life 24 hours a day. Jubilee Square provides a high-profile public platform on which cultural and community organisations can work together and where the whole community can get involved.
